Choose a style that is both flattering and comfortable for your body type
Be aware that ball gown style skirts are heavy. If the gown has straps the weight of the gown may make your shoulders achey and tired by the end of your recpetion
Wear comfortable bridal shoes. If you choose shoes for looks only and your feet get tired you will dirty and possibly ruin the hem of your gown if you kick off your shoes during your recpetion.
Be sure to find out how much your wedding gown alterations will cost before purchasing your gown. Alterations can run into the hundreds and even thousands of dollars so don't be caught off guard. Ask up front what the cost will be and if you are buying your gown in a location far from home (60 minutes or more) approximately how many visits it will take to complete the alterations. Will you want to make the drive that many times or find a seamstress closer to where you live?
